Megaesophagus is a disease that can affect any dog. This disease causes dogs to lose function of their esophagus, which makes them regurgitate food and water. Regurgitation can lead to aspiration pneumonia which is a potentially fatal condition. Eating and drinking from an elevated or upright position (in a Bailey chair, for example) can help with the regurgitation, as the gravity from being upright helps the food to move down the esophagus and into the stomach. Bailey chairs, ramps, and stairs are all good options to assist in feeding with this condition.
